Tuesday evening, NOlympics LA held its first public forum on the  LA 2024 2028 Olympic bid, which provided the first truly open and accessible opportunity for our coalition and members of the public to address the negative consequences of a 2028 Olympics on all of Los Angeles. The evening centered on a series of panel discussions featuring representatives from our amazing partner organizations including the LA Tenants Union, Crenshaw Subway Coalition, BLM-LA, LA CAN, AF3IRM, Socialist Alternative, March and Rally LA, SAJE, Anti-Racist Action, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Ground Game LA. Guest speakers from the UCLA Departments of History and African-American Studies joined in as well for what was a spirited dissection of Olympic and Los Angeles history, declarations of where we are in 2017, and ideas for how to organize and improve our communities moving forward. That night proved something we’ve known for a while: our coalition partners are some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable organizers in the region. Their expertise and individual experiences touched on a variety of intersectional issues at the core of urban life in Los Angeles: tenants rights, homelessness, healthcare, human trafficking, anti-imperialism, police militarization, the relationship between transit and displacement, and so on. Senator Feinstein: You have, on several occasions, openly stated that you do not support single-payer healthcare. You’re “not there yet.” Now, at a time when tens of millions of lives hang in the balance, a Republican colleague - Senator Daines of Montana - is forcing you and other Democrats to ‘show your hand’ to the world. As your constituents and people who will be affected by the horrid GOP legislation being discussed, we implore you to openly state a position on single-payer healthcare. This is a platform that has worked in every developed country around the world - and could even plausibly be enacted at your own state’s level given the size of its economy on a global scale. If you seek to represent your California constituency, now is the time to stand up and show both your Republican colleagues and those at home who rely on your governance that you are on the moral side of history. Members of DSA-LA and the ICE out of LA coalition shut down the East LA Sheriff’s Station for three hours on Thursday evening to demand that LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell end his policy of cooperating with ICE as well as his opposition to SB54, California’s “Sanctuary State” bill. Dozens of activists and community members converged on the Belvedere Park LASD station chanting “ICE out of LA!” and “End ICE collaboration! No more deportations!” Six courageous members of DSA-LA were able to make their way inside the station before the sheriffs chained the doors shut. For the next three hours they sat in the lobby with linked arms and delivered their demands to the officers in the station. Outside, the crowd held rallies at both main entrances of the station. LASD officers barricaded their driveway in the face of the protesters, who were not intimidated by the lines of armed sheriffs in riot gear. During the action, this station was totally shut down and no officers or patrol cars were able to enter or leave. Continue reading
